In France, the Labor Code (articles R4224-23 et seq.) requires all employers to install safety signage adapted to the risks present in the company: signage of dangers, identification of mandatory PPE at workstations, signage of emergency exits and means of fighting fire. For ERPs, additional obligations apply depending on the category (reception capacity) and the type of activity. Signage must comply with the ISO 7010 standard for pictograms.

For large capacity ERPs and establishments at particular risk (industries, risky workshops), regulations may require photoluminescent signs which remain visible in the event of a power outage. These panels charge in daylight and emit their own light for several hours in total darkness (EN ISO 17398 compliance). For offices and small establishments, standard panels compliant with ISO 7010 are sufficient in the majority of cases. Consult your local safety commission if in doubt.

The general rule: the orientation and evacuation signs must be at eye level (1.50 to 2.20 m from the ground) and visible from the area concerned without obstacles. The PPE identification signs at the workstation must be visible before accessing the risk area. The prohibition and warning signs are positioned at the entrance to the area concerned. For environments where forklifts pass, provide reinforced fixings at height (3-4 m) to prevent tearing.

The prohibition sign uses round red pictograms with a diagonal bar: they prohibit an action or access (prohibition of smoking, prohibited access, prohibited direction). The obligatory signage uses round blue pictograms: they impose an action or equipment (wearing a helmet is compulsory, wearing gloves is compulsory, wearing safety shoes). These two families are ISO 7010 standardized and universally understandable. A third family: yellow triangular warnings indicating danger without prohibiting or imposing.

For industrial environments and workshops, choose 1.5-2 mm thick powder-coated aluminum which resists shocks, projections, handling and industrial cleaning. For areas with high mechanical stress (passage of trolleys, oil splashes), 3 mm thick or stainless steel plates are preferable. Avoid standard PVC panels and adhesive vinyl in industrial environments: their lifespan is much shorter (1-3 years compared to 15-20 years for aluminum).
